Summer Fun!!

Neighbors gathered to chat as they walked; neighbors shared over the fence
as they gardened; neighbors helped neighbors with projects: neighbors
invited neighbors over for a drink. In addition to this sharing, there were
three events.

First, Gayle and Don Reisch invited all to swim, or just visit, at their
gorgeous pool. It was hot, hot, hot, and the water was great for kids and
parents. Yes, we even had some kids! Mary Mackey organized the event.
Many brought drinks and snacks. The date was Saturday, June 30.

When it finally began to cool down, people regrouped in the street at the
top of the hill. The grills were hot, the food was fantastic, the
conversation was even better.

The 4th dawned another scorcher. But Angela Forster had it all organized --
the parade with flags, bicycles, floats, a kazoo band, dogs, balloons and
more flags. How did we ever live without Angela? The Bloody Marys helped,
too!. The parade marched all the way around Cornell Circle and Avenue.

August 3 brought the traditional endurance contest of three houses in three
hours, all put together by CJ. Much talk, much laughter, much sharing.
Appetizers at Debby's, sandwiches at Byron and Eric's, ice cream in the
Henritze's. Great group of people . . . a good summer!

The Early Years, Our History

A beautiful tile swimming pool was installed next door to Ed and Charlotte
Hawkins house at 2980 South Lafayette Drive in 1957. Four families,
Dorothy and Warren Orr,1500 East Cornell Avenue,
Eileen and Ed Swets, 1420 East Cornell Avenue,
Carleen and Norman Christensen, 2940 South Lafayette Drive, and
Gina and Homer Reed, 1431 East Cornell Avenue,
were owners of the pool with the Hawkins and shared in the construction and
maintenance of the facility. The families had 7 children who enjoyed the
pool among themselves and with friends.

Each family took responsibility for the cleaning of the pool for a month
during the summer, and, it's said, Hawkins was very particular about the
maintenance. When the Swets left the neighborhood, Jane and Dick Brown,
1511 East Cornell Avenue, bought out the Swets.

The Hawkins had good friends in the community, partying and going on
mountain picnics with the families. Some would say it is unusual for a
contractor to live happily in a community he has constructed.

Gayle and Don Reisch purchased the home and pool from the Hawkins in 1967.
In recent years they have graciously hosted a pool party for the neighbors
during the summer, frequently near the 4th of July.
